Have you heard of the Ford Edsel?
In the 1950s, Ford Motors were on a roll. They believed they had their finger on the pulse of the American driver and the all-new ‘Edsel’ was going to be their crowning glory. The Ford Execs were giddy and poured huge resources into the car’s development. They loved it.
But…
The public didn’t. Even the focus groups hated it. But Ford ploughed on, pouring huge resources into its development and marketing, convinced they were onto a winner.
The result?
Over $250 million down the drain and a prominent place in the chronicles of corporate cock ups. Sometimes we fall in love with an idea that just won’t happen.
I love the idea of having the same body I had when I was an eighteen-year-old roofer. It’s not happening.
I’d love to have another Sunday Times No 1 Best Seller. Nope, not now.
I’d love to be able to speak Spanish. Eso no va a suceder.
And that’s OK. Making a decision not to stick with a dream is as important as deciding to follow one.
Or maybe you should stick with your love? After all, some do work.
Take FedEx and Amazon both launched with several years of just not working. The iPod which critics were delighted to poo poo. And Crocs (I know - a crime against footwear!) who after their launch were universally described as ugly and now sell 126 million pairs a year – that’s four a second!
Did you spot the massive caveat?
If your love brings you contentment, energy and joy - stick with it. If it doesn’t…
I’d love to know what you think. Please leave a comment below.
Be Brilliant!
