‘I’m nervcited’.
I heard this yesterday when I was sharing tools on how to instantly turn being nervous to being excited.
It’s new word created by the daughter of one my clients as she was about to start her first term at ‘big school’.
I think it’s lovely.
When exploring your state, there’s not much difference between the two. Yet one makes you buzz and the other makes you sick.
And the point in the middle is now, and forever will be known as, nervcited.
Though the step between nervous and excited may seem vast, it’s actually just two small steps. Nervous – nervcited – excited.

Focus on what excited will feel like, not how nervous makes you feel – its mind over matter.
I’m about to do a charity shark dive next week (a Scottish aquarium and sadly not the Caribbean!). It’s for work as part of a Team building exercise ?!
I was feeling sick to my tummy at the thought of this, until I took my kids to an aquarium and just tried to look at the experience not as something to dread, but as an amazing opportunity that would be such a waste if I didn’t get enjoyment from it. So I am moving out of nervcitement territory and into ‘i can’t wait’ mode. I guess the tip here is, flip it round, what would it take to make this a positive experience. It’s going to happen no matter what, so enjoy it and relish every second! Ps. Forcing s smile when I’m worried or angry also helps.
If it’s a confrontation simply imagine the person/s sitting on the loo… even the most respected or powerful have bodily functions so there’s that barrier removed!!! For me its about looking at the benefits of what it is you are doing so for the new school it would be new friends, new activities and new learning.

Top tip – Change mental focus from internal to external focus-it’s not about you it’s about them their wants and needs
This time last year I realised that avoiding social situations had to stop. The thought of walking into a room of strangers terrified me, but I realised that, having been single for 7 years, if I ever wanted to meet anyone ever again I needed to actually be where other people were! I was lonely and I didn’t want to be lonely for the rest of my life. I knew I needed to face my fears.
So I discovered meetup.com, joined some local groups, took a big deep breath and jumped. Initially I’d have to take it one baby step at a time – “I’m just putting some makeup on to look nice”, “I’m just getting in the car”, “I’m just going for a drive”… until I made it as far as the venue. Then “I’m just getting myself a drink”, turned around, the event host saw me and beckoned me over.
I went to 4 meetups in my first weekend. Then I spotted an open mic! I bought a new guitar especially for it and off I went!
A year on, I have a whole new set of friends, I play badminton regularly, I go to 4 or 5 open mics every month (next week I’m going on holiday to Scotland and will be walking, on my own, into the pub round the corner with my guitar to perform there!!!), I’ve done escape rooms, archery, been to gigs, danced and sung my socks off… and met some very special people along the way.
I’ll be honest, every Friday night I go to the pub with my badminton buddies and still there is an instinct in me that just wants to run… but I don’t. And then I relax. And there’s a particular song that makes me so nervous that my hand shakes and I haven’t yet managed to play it perfectly. So I keep playing it. One day I’ll stop being scared of it! (Sorry to the people who are sick of hearing it…).
My life has changed this year as a result of facing my fears. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen over the next year 🙂
I tell myself and my kids to visualise 24 hours ahead when anything you’re worried or nervcited about has been done and you’ll be there wondering why you ever felt like you did. Works nearly every time!
Power pose – I am like wonder woman in the mirror!
Whenever I do any public speaking (whether it’s a 60 second presentation or a full blown speech) I just think “what’s the worst thing that can happen?” No-one in the audience ever wants you to fail, or laughs at you – they are just willing you along, just as I am when I’m in the audience. If it goes well then great – if not then within 5 minutes it’s yesterdays news and everyone has moved on. I’ll brush myself down and plan to do the next one better!
