'I thought you’d be taller.' That was the greeting from a client as I arrived to deliver their staff conference keynote.
My reply could have been, 'And I thought you’d be thinner.' But good manners (and the fact I'd been paid) meant I just smiled and agreed.
People may think I should be taller. The Geordie Tony Robbins.
Yes, I should be 6’ 2”.
Instead, I’m 5’ 6” (on a good day).
But that’s life. Full of shoulds.
People should be kinder.
I should earn more.
The world should be fairer.
I should have more followers.
Why should this be so hard?
The Wifi should work.
I should have been given that.
They should listen.
I should be taller.
The challenge with should is that it focuses on what’s missing, not what’s possible.
I’ll never be 6’ 2”. But being 5’ 6” has its benefits. I can slip through a crowd faster. I rarely bang my head. I always have extra leg room.
You can waste a lifetime waiting for things to be as they should be. Or you can use what you’ve got, right now and do something brilliant with it.
What are the ‘shoulds’ you’ve been carrying around? And how could you (or have) turn them into an advantage? Go on, leave a comment.
Success doesn’t come from ‘should.’ It comes from maximising the here, the now, the what is.
Be Brilliant!
