I read a book where the protagonist, reviewing her life, shared that instead of making lifelong promises, she and her husband made one-year commitments.
One year, they learned yoga.
One year, they travelled around Europe.
One year, they stayed home and did DIY.
Each year had its own theme. A story. A season.
She shared One Year We… I loved that idea.
So simple, yet so freeing.
I think one of the main reasons people don’t try something new is the thought that it has to be forever.
We fear that if we give something up, like alcohol, we’ll never be allowed it again.
Or if you start something, like running, you’ll have to keep doing it… forever.
And then there’s what other people might think.
‘Didn’t you say you were giving that up?’
‘I thought you were into that now?’
Sometimes we don’t even start because we worry about what might happen if we stop.
But what if you permitted yourself to try something just for a year?
One year we did park runs.
One year we didn’t drink alcohol.
One year we called an old friend a week.
One year we learned to dance.
One year we ate vegetarian.
One year we built something together.
One year we rested properly.
One year we travelled by train instead of plane.
One year we didn’t buy anything new.
One year we took a photo and wrote our journal every day.
(Of course you can change We to I)
You don’t have to commit to forever to change your life.
Even if you only keep part of what you learn, it’s still a win.
One Year We… is not about success or failure. It’s about discovery.
You might find something that becomes part of who you are.
Or you might find something that was right for that time and no longer is.
Both are brilliant outcomes.
Give yourself the gift of curiosity.
What could your One Year We be?
Leave it in the comments - I’d love to see what you’re thinking.
Life doesn’t have to change permanently to be profound.
Sometimes, all it takes is one year.
Be Brilliant!
Michael
