Have you ever had this conversation?
‘I didn’t get your email.’
‘Have you checked your junk?’
‘Ah, there it is.’
Of course it was.
Apparently, the email had been examined by an algorithm and, without consulting either of us, declared it rubbish.
Either that or it hadn’t been actioned and ‘It’s in my junk box’ was an excuse.
But you would never do that. Would you? 😉
Email. Real mail. Mental mail.
Oooh ‘Mental Mail.
Mental Mail can easily moved to your cerebral junk box.
You’re human. You must filter. Or you’d be totally overwhelmed.
You receive an idea and filter it: That’ll never work.
Someone gives you feedback: They don’t understand.
An opportunity appears: I’m not qualified.
Someone suggests doing something differently: We’ve done that before.
A challenge to something you believe: They’re wrong.
Junk filters are useful. Without them, your inbox would be unbearable.
We need mental filters. You can’t seriously consider every idea, opinion or opportunity that comes your way.
The challenge isn’t having a filter. It’s assuming the filter is right.
What’s the best idea you’ve had or know about that almost ended up in the junk box? Please leave your thoughts here.
Here’s your challenge:
Check your mental junk box.
Think about something you’ve dismissed.
An idea
An invitation
Some feedback
A person
An opportunity
A different way of doing something
And ask:
What have I automatically rejected without even opening it?
Be Brilliant
Michael
