25 Reasons to Be Cheerful – Autumn Edition

Autumn has well and truly arrived here in the northern hemisphere.

Mornings are crisper.

Evenings are darker.

The leaves look fabulous – but they’re letting go.

Some people see this as the start of the long slide into winter.

I think it’s the perfect moment to pause and notice some of the little things that make life brighter.

I’ve been thinking about what really lifts spirits.

Not the big, once-in-a-lifetime moments, but the everyday sparks that make life lighter.

The things that don’t cost much (or anything) take little effort, but can change how a day feels.

Here’s 20 to get us started. What would you add?

  1. A favourite song playing unexpectedly.
  2. Finding money in an old coat pocket.
  3. The smell of toast.
  4. Clean sheets.
  5. A child’s laugh.
  6. Finishing a book.
  7. Starting a book.
  8. Remembering a brilliant holiday.
  9. Planning the next one.
  10. A handwritten note.
  11. Hearing a ‘thank you’ and meaning it.
  12. The first sniff of a fresh-brewed coffee.
  13. Being inside when it’s pouring outside (never take this for granted)
  14. A compliment you didn’t expect.
  15. Someone remembers your name.
  16. A long, sincere, hug.
  17. Seeing the sea.
  18. Watching your team win. Come on Newcastle!
  19. Laughing so hard you snort.
  20. Waking up and realising it’s the weekend.
