Have you ever written ‘a letter to your future self?’
It is a personal development classic.
You’re on a course. You write it, pop it in an envelope and address it to yourself.
The enthusiastic facilitator takes it away.
Then you forget about it.
Months (or years) later, it drops through your letterbox.
Ah, a flashback to the work offsite. You tear open the envelope, read your message and think… what the flip was I on about?
How about a seasonal twist? A letter to your future elf!
Your future elf is the version of you who’s there when life gets busy.
Sorts your plans.
Helps you find the pressie you swore you bought but can’t remember where you hid.
They nudge you with tiny reminders – but just about what matters.
They bring a bit of magic to the moments that need it.
Encourage you to breathe when all around feels like panic.
What would you write to your future elf?
Here is a starter for ten.
Hi Future Elf
Thank you for helping me get through the moments where I thought I didn’t have time.
For the quiet encouragement when I needed to keep going.
For showing me the joy in the smallest things
For being the calm voice when everything else felt loud.
Thank you for keeping me sane during the Christmas and holiday season and for keeping the fun alive.
Just a few lines showing a little appreciation. And subconsciously couple of requests for you for the weeks ahead.
Write it now.
A paragraph will do. Make it warm. Be honest (it’s more fun when you read it back).
Seal it and stash it somewhere you’ll find it in January.
A drawer. A jacket pocket. The back of a notebook. Make it somewhere safe enough to keep it, but easy enough to rediscover.
Let your future elf surprise you.
They’re good at that.
And if you feel like sharing a line or two from your letter, please leave a comment. I’d love to hear how you’re bringing a little calm and brilliance to this time of year.
Be Brilliant!
Michael
