‘It’s too hot!’
Is that the best thing to tell yourself while we experience record temperatures?
Language shapes your experience more than you think.
This week while everyone around me has been saying, ‘It’s too hot,’ I’ve been suggesting they test a different phrase.
‘It could be cooler.’
It sounds tiny, maybe a little trite, but think about the key word in that sentence. When you say ‘cooler’, your brain responds differently than if you say ‘hot’.
One can make you feel even hotter.
One can create the perception of feeling a little cooler.
Language can’t change the weather. But it can change how you experience it.
And this works with pretty much every statement you make.
The next time you catch yourself saying something extreme, pause for a moment.
Maybe it’s not awful.
Maybe it just could be better.
Maybe rather than saying I don’t have the time.
You need to say I’m finding some time.
And rather than being tired.
Maybe you need a little more energy?
Be Brilliant!
Michael
